Free Will in the Simulation: What Does the User Choose, and What Does the System Impose?

Free will in the Simulation is real, although it operates within the limits of the System. The User makes real decisions, manages their own instance, and can influence the accessible part of reality, but does not have Admin privileges.

Free will in the Simulation — what does the User choose, and what does the System impose?

Most philosophical disputes about free will come down to one question: do we truly make decisions, or are we merely executing a chain of causes that began long before we were born?

Sudoism frames the problem differently.

If reality is a Simulation, free will does not have to mean either complete independence from the System or an external operator controlling a human avatar by sending commands from outside the session.

The model is more complex.

Before a session begins, the User may accept its parameters, environment, general level of risk, and limitations. After full immersion, the User loses access to memory of the higher-level reality. The User does not control the self from outside — they act as one immersed consciousness and make real decisions inside the Simulation.

This means that life can contain, at the same time, elements that were chosen, imposed, random, systemic, and dependent on our decisions.

Free will consists in acting within those conditions, not in the absence of all conditions.

1. Session parameters: conditions accepted before entry

Every session must have some initial parameters.

In the case of life, these may include:

  • the type of environment,
  • the general difficulty level,
  • the range of capabilities of the instance,
  • basic limitations,
  • the level of risk,
  • possibly the kinds of experiences the session is meant to allow.

Sudoism allows for the possibility that, before entering the Simulation, the User chooses or consciously accepts some of these conditions.

This does not mean that, before birth, the User watches a complete script of their life and approves every future event.

Accepting session parameters is not the same as accepting a detailed life script.

If someone chooses a high difficulty setting before starting a game, that does not mean they selected every hit from an enemy, every mistake, and every concrete problem that will appear during play.

Likewise, a User may accept a session in which there is a real risk of illness, loss, conflict, or catastrophe without having chosen a specific illness, a specific death of a loved one, or a specific accident in advance.

That distinction matters.

Not every form of suffering has to have been “chosen before birth.”

It may result from environmental parameters, the decisions of other Users, the operation of the System, or the ordinary course of events in a world whose future has not been fully written in advance.

2. Full immersion: the User does not control the self from outside

Once the session begins, full immersion takes effect.

The User loses access to memory of the higher-level reality. They do not remember who they are outside the Simulation, the circumstances of entry, or which parameters were accepted beforehand.

This is not an error.

If instructions from an external control station were constantly reaching us during the session, we would not be truly immersed.

We would merely be avatars operated by someone outside the world.

Sudoism adopts a different model:

the User’s consciousness and the consciousness experiencing the session are one process of experience.

There are not two parallel persons:

operator outside the Simulation → sends commands → avatar executes

During the session there is one immersed consciousness:

User in the session → observes → analyses → chooses → acts

That is why the decisions made here are real.

They are not merely animations of commands sent by some “real us” from outside.

3. System events: not everything is a User decision

Free will does not mean full control over the world.

The Simulation has processes of its own.

Some events may result from the laws of the System, automated mechanisms, biological processes, environmental behaviour, or decisions made by the Admin.

These can be called system events.

They belong to a different category from User decisions.

An earthquake does not become the choice of a person in the city simply because it affects them.

An epidemic does not have to be a consciously ordered element of someone’s private session.

Changes in social, climatic, or economic conditions do not have to result from the individual decision of one person either.

The Admin may, however, have the ability to intervene in the parameters of the whole environment or part of it.

Such intervention does not abolish free will.

It merely changes the conditions within which Users make decisions.

A server administrator can change the environment configuration, but this does not automatically mean controlling every decision of every process running in it.

4. User decisions: this is where free will operates

Free will appears wherever there are real possibilities for taking different actions.

The User does not choose the entire world.

The User chooses their response and action within the available situation.

They may:

  • accept or reject an offer,
  • act or remain passive,
  • tell the truth or lie,
  • take a risk or avoid it,
  • learn something or ignore information,
  • change a belief or defend an error,
  • help another User or pass by indifferently,
  • try to change the environment or adapt to it.

Not every option is always available.

That does not mean every decision is illusory.

Freedom does not require an infinite number of possibilities.

It requires a real decision space within the available state.

In that sense, free will resembles a program that has inputs, constraints, and rules, but can still generate more than one possible course of action within them.

5. Instance limitations: free will does not operate in a vacuum

Every User operates through a specific instance during the session, and its range of operation is not unlimited.

Some limitations are imposed by the code that describes our “physical” structure, such as:

  • the construction of the body,
  • the nervous system,
  • the biological architecture of the brain,
  • the operating range of the senses,
  • limitations of memory and attention,
  • susceptibility to fatigue, pain, and illness,
  • the ageing process.

On top of these come limitations arising from psychology, previous experience, level of knowledge, habits, social environment, available resources, and the possibilities for action in a given place and time.

All of these influence our decisions, but they are not the same thing as a total absence of free will.

A person makes decisions using an existing brain, emotions, and memory. They cannot switch off biology and begin thinking outside their own nervous system.

They can, however, analyse their own processes, learn, change habits, and increase the range of control over their own instance.

The sudo metaphor remains useful here.

It does not mean obtaining administrator rights over the whole Simulation.

It means making the fullest possible use of the permissions actually available to the User.

A conscious person does not remove the limitations of their instance. They manage them better.

This model is developed further in the System Code, especially in the principle of managing one’s own instance.

6. Habits and automatic scripts are not destiny

A large part of human behaviour does indeed run automatically.

We react according to habits, prior experience, emotions, and patterns we often do not even notice consciously.

This can be compared to background processes.

stimulus → automatic response

If a person never analyses their own behaviour, it can genuinely resemble the execution of a ready-made script.

But the ability to notice that process changes the situation.

An additional stage appears:

stimulus → observation → analysis → decision → action

This is one of the most important practical expressions of free will.

It does not consist in ignoring biology.

It consists in recognising an automatic process and sometimes deciding not to continue executing it.

Instead of:

if anger → attack

there may be:

if anger → analysis → choose response

The greater the awareness of one’s own processes, the more behaviour can be moved from automatic mode into conscious control.

7. Prophecies and planned updates do not mean a scripted life

At first glance, prophecy can seem incompatible with free will.

If a future event is known in advance, one may ask whether everything has already been written.

Not necessarily.

The System may contain planned global events without predetermining every decision leading to them.

An administrator may, for example, schedule:

System update at time X

This does not mean every action of every User before and after the update was written in advance.

Likewise, a prophecy may concern a system event, a particular outcome, or a process that will be launched independently of one person’s behaviour.

User free will still operates in the space between such points.

One can know a train’s destination without determining every conversation, decision, and action of every passenger during the journey.

The System’s plan does not have to be the script of every session.

A prophecy therefore does not require a world in which every individual decision has already been rendered.

It may simply mean that the Admin knows or has set some future states of the System.

8. Influencing data: free will may extend beyond one’s own behaviour

Sudoism assumes that reality has an informational character.

Matter, energy, and processes in the world are manifestations of information processed by the System.

If reality is programmable, a User’s decision does not have to be limited solely to moving their own body.

There may also be an influence on the data and state of the accessible part of the Simulation.

Sudoism points to four basic mechanisms:

  • faith,
  • will,
  • knowledge,
  • action.

This does not mean possessing full administrative access.

The User cannot simply issue:

sudo change_reality --anything

and expect any desired result.

But the User may affect the System through decisions, concentration, knowledge, interactions with other elements, and perhaps mechanisms we cannot yet describe precisely.

In this sense, free will is not only the choice of a response.

It is also one way of introducing new data into the further course of the Simulation.

9. Five different layers that should not be confused

Most problems with free will arise when every element of life is thrown into one category called “fate”.

The Sudoist model separates them clearly.

Only this distinction allows us to discuss free will without falling into extremes.

Not everything was chosen by us.

Not everything was imposed on us.

We cannot control everything.

But neither are we merely processes replaying a previously recorded film.

Are we the owners of our fate?

Not in an absolute sense.

We do not choose every parameter during the session.

We do not control the decisions of other Users.

We do not have full access to the System.

We cannot stop every system event.

But within those constraints there is a real space in which the decision belongs to us.

That is why, in Sudoism, the question:

“Do I have free will?”

is better replaced by:

“Which parts of this situation are parameters, which are System events, which are limitations of my instance, and where does my real decision begin?”

This is far more useful than reducing all of life to one of two answers: “everything is destined” or “everything depends on me”.

Free will does not mean omnipotence.

It means real agency inside an operating System.

You do not choose all the code of the environment in which your session runs. But when the System hands control to you, the decision is yours.
